        The UP  Story

UP was formed in 2013, by Eddie Dorey (vocals, ukuleles, harmonica) and Rob Nicholls (vocals and ukuleles) to enabled them to re-imagine both classic songs and originals from their shared musical history, and add songs from their personal wish list. This resulted in performances that showcase their distinctive but complimentary vocal styles, with Eddie's melodic ukulele soloing supported by Rob's sympathetic and percussive rhythm stylings.  James Dorey joined over the summer of 2017 on U-bass to add some rock steady bottom end to the UP sound, he had already played bass on and recorded & mixed UP's 2015 EP 'Heck Of A Time'. Rob left UP in Oct 2022 but remains an important part of the UP story.

UP's current line up of James & Eddie Dorey are happy to present their 'folky, funky, four string thing' in all manner of settings.  Their 'low maintenance' set up means they can easily play a house concert or micro pub/cafe/restaurant environment, wholly acoustically, with small amp re-inforcement or plugged into a PA.  They love playing for a discerning pub audience but also really enjoy playing on an outdoor stage, be this for a local community event, in a beer garden or on a festival stage, big or small. As ukulele players, UP are delighted to play for ukulele enthusiasts. In 2016, they made their debut on the UK ukulele festival circuit, playing at Skipsea and Winchester Ukulele Festivals and in 2017 returned to Winchester and also won the Sunday Session Rising Stars competition at The Ukulele Festival of Scotland. They returned to play at Scotland in 2018 and played at the inaugural Upton-upon-Severn Ukulele Festival the same year. 'Thanks for your amazing performance!'

The Ukulele Festival of Scotland

'.....I was never previously a uke fan, so only booked UP on the strength of their obvious musicianship and recommendations from some of our regulars.  Their gig was a Damascene conversion.  I would never have believed that a repertoire ranging from John Prine to Ben E King could be so successfully translated onto ukuleles. Our audience loved 'em. Yours will too!'

Kevin Fitzgerald, Organiser, Owd Boots Folk Music Club, Nottingham.

'I"ve always preferred music that lives slightly off centre, something without an obvious pigeonhole and I think UP do just that. Combining ukuleles and close harmonies and a song choice not intended for such a combination, they have created a uniquie style which never fails to bring an uplifting vibe to the evening.'

Grahame Cooke, Music organiser.

'Dorey's voice is unmistakeable and unmissable.  Great vocals, skilled musicians and wonderful harmonies.  No need to worry about the forecast. UP bring a little sunshine every time!'

Zoe Head, Publican, The Johnson Arms, Nottingham.

'We wanted to give a more personal thank you to acts that stood out on the day.  We got great feedback about you from the crowd and the venue.  Cheers again!'

Matlock Bath Music Festival

'The sound of contemporary folk poured through ukuleles,  original and dynamic live shows.'

‘I’ve seen this amazing trio around the folk circuit and they are magical. Clever and adept at what they do. Highly recommended. Don’t miss them’
